Term Insurance After 60: Is It Possible?

Yes, many insurers accept new applicants up to age 65. But the rules get stricter, and a first-ever policy at this age is the biggest hurdle.

Short answer

  • Many insurers allow entry up to age 65.
  • If this is your first life insurance policy ever, some insurers may decline above 60. A past or existing policy helps a lot.
  • The policy term is usually shorter, often about 10 years or up to age 75.

What insurers usually look at

  • Insurance history: past or existing life policies, including matured ones, can make a big difference.
  • Medical tests: full tests, often including a treadmill or stress test and other heart checks.
  • Income multiple: cover is usually limited to about 5 to 6 times your yearly income.
  • Income proof: regular income proof is usually needed. Shortcut routes are generally not available after 55 to 60.
  • Pre-approval: some insurers need approval before the application is filed.

Common reasons for rejection

  • No life insurance history at all
  • Medical findings in heart or blood tests
  • Cover asked above 5 to 6 times income
  • Policy term asked beyond the insurer's maximum age

Documents usually needed

  • PAN, Aadhaar and address proof
  • ITR or income proof for the last 2 to 3 years
  • Copies of past or existing life policies
  • Medical reports, if any condition is being treated
