Term Insurance for NRIs, From Any Country

NRIs can buy term cover from Indian insurers while living abroad. Your country, income and documents decide how much cover you get and whether you need to come to India.

Short answer

  • Insurers group countries as accepted, accepted with limits, or not accepted.
  • GCC countries (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain), the USA, UK, Canada, Singapore and Australia are on the accepted list of many insurers.
  • Several insurers allow a video medical from abroad, so you may not need to travel to India.

What insurers usually look at

  • Income and education: a common minimum is graduation with an income of about 10 lakh rupees a year. Some insurers ask for 15 to 20 lakh.
  • Income proof: for NRIs, regular income proof is usually required. Shortcuts that work for residents in India are generally not accepted.
  • Medicals: several insurers allow video medicals from abroad, with higher cover allowed at higher income. Some insurers need you to be in India for the medical and signing.
  • Age: entry is usually allowed up to 50 to 60.
  • Cover: for accepted countries, several crore is possible. Countries accepted with limits get a lower cover or extra premium.
  • OCI and PIO card holders: some insurers do not accept them.

  • Bank statements, usually 3 to 6 months
  • NRI questionnaire from the insurer
